Hope Step Japan! 13 March 2016 at Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy, Amsterdam

The 11th of March 2016 marks five years since the Great East Japan Earthquake (a.k.a the 311 disaster). Hope Step Japan! and the Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy are pleased to announce that the annual memorial event Hope Step Japan! will take place this year on the 13th of March, under the theme of Quality of Life.

Stichting Hope Step Japan! is a collective formed mainly by Japanese residents based in Amsterdam with various backgrounds like culture, science, education and administration. Being active since 2011 we have organized a number of study events, lectures, discussions, and workshops as well as projects and exhibitions. The Lloyd Hotel & Cultural Embassy has been supporting activities pertaining to the 311 disaster, with a deep sympathy for Japan and especially towards those who have been affected by the disaster.

What we have learned from the disaster and the numerous shocking facts in the past five years is the importance of an individual’s participation in the matter. Today, in the devastated areas reconstruction is still being carried out at significantly high speed. The traces of the disaster are disappearing rapidly, on a daily basis. To consider the extent of these changes seems to become more difficult as time passes and interest on these topics scatter and fade away, yet concurrently, the importance of the individual is only increasing. As an individual, we can keep following the news in order to study and incorporate what we have learned into our daily lives. This is probably the best and most secure way to remember the disaster and pass on information to the next generation.

Keeping this thought in mind, we have decided to make this year’s edition focused on individuals. We would like to create the event with participants and visitors all together. Having a flea market as the main feature, we would like to create a platform where many personal discussions can take place. Recycling unwanted goods also fits well with the theme of the event. Around the flea market there will be various presentations organized or initiated by Hope Step Japan! in order to interact with the audience using new and different perspectives. The themes vary between art, social design, youth activities, sustainable energy and politics from both Japan and the Netherlands.
